Grove VOC and eCO2 Gas Sensor (SGP30)
Sensirion SGP30 metal-oxide gas sensor: total VOCs in ppb and an estimated CO2-equivalent in ppm.
Say it to PAL
“Remind me to open a window when the air gets stale.”
The code PAL writes
p.onSensorChange('grove-sgp30', 'tvoc', (tvoc) => {
if (tvoc > 660) p.notify('VOCs are high (' + tvoc + ' ppb) - time to air the room');
});
await p.waitUntilStopped();When to pick it
Use for general indoor air freshness (VOCs from cooking, cleaning, paint).
Good to know
- ECO2 is an estimate derived from hydrogen, not measured CO2.
- No readings for the first 15 s after power-on or re-initialisation.
- Humidity compensation uses another temperature + humidity sensor on the same board when there is one (SHT3x, AHT20, DHT22...); with none, the sensor uses its built-in 11.57 g/m³.
About it
The Grove VOC and eCO2 Gas Sensor carries a Sensirion SGP30, a multi-pixel metal-oxide gas sensor with on-chip humidity compensation and a dynamic baseline algorithm. It reports TVOC (ppb) and eCO2 (ppm). eCO2 is an ESTIMATE derived from hydrogen, not a true CO2 measurement - use an SCD30 or SCD41 when you need real CO2. The board carries a 1.8 V regulator and level shifter, so it runs from 3.3 V or 5 V Grove ports. Palpable polls it once per second, as the baseline algorithm requires, and holds back the fixed warm-up values for the first 15 seconds.

Its driver works. We have not signed it off on a real board yet.
I2C address
The Grove VOC and eCO2 Gas Sensor (SGP30) answers at I2C address 0x58. The address is fixed.
Board size
40 × 20 mm
The Air Quality Sensor board measures 40 × 20 mm and stands 6.8 mm tall with its parts. It has no mounting holes. These dimensions are from the maker’s mechanical drawing.
