Gesture Sensor (PAJ7620U2)
Wave your hand to control things — recognizes up, down, left, right, forward, back, rotate, and wave, no touching required.
Say it to PAL
“Keep a log of every hand gesture it sees.”
The code PAL writes
p.onSensorChange('m5-gesture', 'gesture', (mask) => {
if (mask & 0x004) p.log('Swipe left');
if (mask & 0x008) p.log('Swipe right');
});
await p.waitUntilStopped();When to pick it
Use for touchless / contactless control (wave to toggle, swipe to navigate). Not a distance sensor and not a camera — for proximity use a ToF unit, for scene understanding use a camera.
Good to know
- Direction labels (up/down/left/right) are relative to the sensor's mounted orientation — remap them to your frame if the unit is rotated.
- Detection is most reliable at ~5–15 cm; very close, very far, fast motion, or strong IR/sunlight degrade recognition.
About it
A PixArt PAJ7620U2 integrated gesture-recognition sensor that detects nine hand gestures (up, down, left, right, forward, backward, clockwise, counter-clockwise, and wave) over Grove I2C. Sold as the M5Stack Gesture Unit (U127) and as the Seeed Studio Grove - Gesture (101020083); both carry the same part at 0x73. It is a low-power, touchless input — good for hands-free menus, contactless controls, and playful interactions. Effective range is roughly 5–15 cm.
