M5Stack 6-Axis IMU Unit (MPU6886)
Sense motion, tilt, and rotation with a tiny 6-axis IMU on one Grove port.
Say it to PAL
“Tell me when it gets bumped.”
The code PAL writes
p.onSensorChange('m5-imu-mini', 'acceleration_z', (z) => {
if (Math.abs(z - 1) > 0.5) p.log('Bumped!');
});
await p.waitUntilStopped();When to pick it
Best for tilt, motion, shake, and impact detection in a tiny footprint. Choose the IMU Pro Mini instead if you also need a compass heading (magnetometer) or altitude (barometer).
Good to know
- No magnetometer — do not promise compass headings; gyro-only yaw drifts without bound.
- The on-chip temperature reads warmer than ambient (die self-heating); it is for sensor compensation, not room temperature.
About it
The M5Stack 6-Axis IMU Unit packs an InvenSense MPU6886 — a 3-axis accelerometer plus 3-axis gyroscope with a 16-bit ADC and on-chip temperature sensor — on a single Grove I2C connector. Great for tilt sensing, motion/impact detection, step counting, and basic orientation. No magnetometer, so absolute compass headings aren't available.
