Say it to PAL

“Read the dial on channel 0.”

The code PAL writes

const v = await p.read('qwiic-ads7830', 'channel_0');
const percent = Math.round((v / 3.3) * 100);
p.log('Knob position: ' + percent + '%');

“Tell me when any of its inputs change.”

The code PAL writes

const CHANNELS = [
  'channel_0', 'channel_1', 'channel_2', 'channel_3',
  'channel_4', 'channel_5', 'channel_6', 'channel_7',
] as const;
for (const ch of CHANNELS) {
  p.onSensorChange('qwiic-ads7830', ch, (v) => {
    p.log(ch + ': ' + v.toFixed(2) + 'V');
  });
}
await p.waitUntilStopped();

Good to know

  • Input must not exceed 3.3V. Higher voltages will damage the IC.
  • No differential mode — all channels are single-ended (relative to GND).

About it

The ADS7830 is an 8-channel 8-bit analog-to-digital converter with an I2C interface. Each channel reads 0-3.3V with 8-bit resolution (256 steps, ~13mV per step). Ideal for reading multiple analog sensors that lack I2C, such as potentiometers, thermistors, photoresistors, force-sensitive resistors, and analog outputs. Four configurable addresses allow up to 32 analog channels on one bus.

Facts

Tested

Not yet testedLow confidence

It is in our catalog, but nobody has checked it on a real board. It may not work yet. Its driver is written, but it has not been tested on hardware yet.

I2C address

0x48, 0x49, 0x4A, 0x4B

The ADS7830 8-Channel ADC answers at I2C address 0x48. A jumper or pin moves it to 0x49 or 0x4A or 0x4B.

Current

1.4 mA

The catalog lists a typical draw of 1.4 mA for the ADS7830 ADC, copied from the maker’s description and not measured by Palpable.

Board size

30.48 × 17.78 mm

The ADS7830 ADC board measures 30.48 × 17.78 mm and stands 4.6 mm tall with its parts. It has 4 mounting holes. These dimensions are from the maker’s mechanical drawing.

Chip

ADS7830

Its sensor is the Texas Instruments ADS7830.
