Say it to PAL

“How is the air in here?”

The code PAL writes

const pm = await p.read('qwiic-sen5x', 'pm2_5');
const voc = await p.read('qwiic-sen5x', 'voc_index');
const nox = await p.read('qwiic-sen5x', 'nox_index');
p.log(`PM2.5: ${pm} µg/m³, VOC: ${voc}, NOx: ${nox}`);

“Tell me when the air quality gets poor.”

The code PAL writes

p.onSensorChange('qwiic-sen5x', 'pm2_5', (pm) => {
  if (pm > 35) p.notify('Air quality unhealthy: PM2.5 = ' + pm + ' µg/m³');
});
await p.waitUntilStopped();

When to pick it

The ultimate all-in-one air quality sensor. Use when you want PM, VOC, NOx, temperature, AND humidity from a single module. More expensive but replaces 3-4 individual sensors.

Good to know

  • Internal fan needs ~30 seconds to stabilize after power-on.
  • Requires 5V supply — check that your breakout has a regulator if using 3.3V Qwiic.
  • NOx index takes ~12 hours of conditioning for reliable baselines.
  • Fan produces audible hum — not silent like passive sensors.
  • Large module (~40x50mm) — bigger than typical Qwiic breakouts.

About it

The Sensirion SEN55 is a comprehensive environmental sensor node combining particulate matter (PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4.0, PM10), VOC index, NOx index, temperature, and humidity in a single module. Uses laser scattering for PM, a MOX sensor for VOC/NOx, and dedicated elements for temp/humidity. Ideal for complete indoor air quality stations where one sensor covers everything. The SEN55 includes NOx sensing, which the SEN54 lacks.
