Say it to PAL

“Open a web page on my phone when I tap it.”

The code PAL writes

await p.write('qwiic-st25dv', 'write_ndef', { type: 'url', payload: 'https://palpable.technology' });
p.log('NFC tag programmed with URL');

“Tell me when a phone is held near it.”

The code PAL writes

p.onSensorChange('qwiic-st25dv', 'energy_harvesting', (val) => {
  if (val === 1) p.log('Phone detected near NFC tag');
});
await p.waitUntilStopped();

When to pick it

Use when you want phone-tap interaction, NFC-based configuration, contactless data exchange, or smart labeling.

Good to know

  • NFC range is very short (~1-2cm). Phone must be held directly against the antenna.

About it

The ST25DV16K is a dual-interface memory IC that can be accessed via I2C from your microcontroller and via NFC (13.56 MHz) from smartphones and other NFC devices. It stores up to 16Kbit of user data in EEPROM with NDEF record support. Features energy harvesting from the RF field, a fast transfer mode mailbox, and configurable security. Ideal for smart labels, configuration via phone tap, and contactless data exchange.

Facts

Tested

It is in our catalog, but nobody has checked it on a real board. It may not work yet. Its driver is written, but it has not been tested on hardware yet.

I2C address

0x53, 0x57

The catalog lists I2C addresses 0x53 and 0x57 for the ST25DV16K NFC/RFID EEPROM and does not record which one it uses. The address is fixed.

Current

30 µA

The catalog lists a typical draw of 30 µA for the ST25DV NFC, copied from the maker’s description and not measured by Palpable.

Board size

25.4 × 31.75 mm

The ST25DV NFC board measures 25.4 × 31.75 mm and stands 4.6 mm tall with its parts. It has 4 mounting holes. These dimensions are from the maker’s mechanical drawing.

Chip
